Biome Resources: Revolutionizing sleep quality through microbiome innovation
At the end of September, Biome Resources started the first pre-clinical trial of its product KronoBiotic, which aims to improve the quality of sleep of people who have trouble falling asleep or sleeping poorly.
According to the CEO of the startup, Jorge Román, “we did a previous study, in which we analyzed about 40 people, to validate the literature, mainly Anglo-Saxon and European, which mentions certain bacteria that generate neurotransmitters such as serotonin and, therefore, a better quality of sleep”.
Once this analysis was done, they began the probiotic manufacturing, which is currently administered to 60 volunteers, out of the 400 who applied to participate in it. “To begin with, we conducted a survey of all those interested, similar to the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, and based on the results, we selected those who had the most critical problems in getting a good night’s sleep,” explains Román.
Before starting to take the probiotic, the volunteers had to perform a previous test of their microbiome, and in approximately two months, when they finish the consumption of the product, they will have to take a new test, so that Biome Resources can evaluate the information and see if there was indeed a change in the microbiome of those who received the supplement and not the placebo, which must always be used in this kind of studies.
In parallel, the startup is working with a clinic specialized in sleep problems, Simeds, which has neurologists and specialists in the field, and where pharmacological treatments are given to patients who have serious sleeping problems. “It made sense to the specialists at this medical center to evaluate the microbiome, so with them we are working on a parallel study of the 60 most complex cases,” added the company’s CEO.
“The work we are carrying out with the probiotic looks to validate our technology and demonstrate that, by evaluating the microbiome of a given population, functional foods, probiotics and other alternatives can be developed to achieve a preventive tool that treats a specific problem,” explains Jorge Román.
In addition, the CEO of Biome Resources commented that “our work is not strictly speaking the development of probiotics. What we strive to do is to demonstrate that we are a company that understands the microbiome and that manages and analyzes data through artificial intelligence, which allows us to offer solutions to a variety of problems”.
