AntofagastUp: Driving Innovation in Chile’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
The Antofagasta region of Chile is economically significant due to its mining industry. However, it has also emerged as a leader in renewable energy production, particularly in solar and wind power.
To harness the region’s potential and foster its entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem, the AntofagastUp event took place Octiber, 1st and 2nd. This networking event, organized by The Ganesha Lab, CBT Chile, and SOFOFA Hub with support from the Chilean Production Development Corporation (Corfo), aimed to highlight the experiences of key players in the innovation and entrepreneurship landscape in Chile and beyond, emphasizing the crucial role of biotechnology in developing solutions for the national industry.
The event featured notable speakers, including Ramón Salinas, head of Wind Copec; Federico Marque, Operations Manager of Grid Exponential; María Paz Merino, CEO of CBT; and Markus Schreyer, CEO and Managing Partner of The Ganesha Lab.
Key topics discussed during the presentations and discussion panels included the impact of biotechnology in the 21st century, advancements in mining innovation and sustainability, challenges facing the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Antofagasta, and the internationalization of biotechnology ventures.
“Biotechnology is a crucial driver of economic development and sustainability for the future, particularly in a mining region like Antofagasta, which is also making strides in renewable energy. By strengthening biotechnology hubs, we can not only enhance research and innovation but also tackle global challenges like climate change,” stated María Paz Merino, Executive Director of CBT Chile.
After the event, Markus Schreyer stated that “promoting the biotechnology ecosystem in Latin America and Chile is crucial, so hosting events in regions with top-tier exhibitors is essential. It has been an honor to be part of AntofagastUp, providing a unique opportunity to connect, inspire, and motivate entrepreneurs in the region who are seeking internationalization.”
